Welcome to Jan Burke’s web page(s).
Quite obviously, I have only just begun putting some content on the web. The reasons for the slowish development of this web page are many:
-
So far, I am an HTML dummy – I know next to nothing about web page programming. I expect content and form of these pages to grow into something interesting and nice to behold while I plough, or creep, through my 1000-page HTML book.
-
I am still unsure how much info about myself, my thoughts and interests I should place on the web. On the one hand, why should I tell the world so much about myself – I’m not that important, so the world might not want to know anyway. Then, there’s the thoughts of Big Brother on the web, and he would use my web pages as a starting point to generate a profile of me… On the other hand, speech and thought are still free – yes, we’re filmed and photographed at demonstrations, but does that mean we have to paint our faces or do anything else to make ourselves unrecognisable? Isn’t that going back and failing to claim freedom? We all know what happens to freedoms not claimed by the people – so why should I be afraid of info about myself on the web? – Whether I can resolve this dilemma, and how, remains to be seen.
-
I spend a significant amount of my spare time bicycling, reading, and playing chess, so there’s not too many occasions to sit down and have a go at web page development. But there is also this vague feeling of having to catch up in computer languages a little.
We’ll see where this ends.
